The largest petroleum company in Colombia, state-owned Ecopetrol has established itself in recent years as a leading provider of energy for the whole of Latin America. One of the largest 25 oil and gas firms in the world, the Bogota-based company is part of the four leading petroleum businesses in Latin America and is ranked 280 on the Fortune Global 500. With a history dating back to 1921, Ecopetrol now has nearly 7,000 people working for it full-time. Led by CEO Javier Gutiérrez Pemberthy, Last year the company reported revenues of $38.3bn, with total net income of $8.3bn, and this year it has seen profits rise even further, thanks to higher oil production in Colombia.
